My working environment presents challenging conditions as regards the capability of managing the working time, the identification of requirements and the definition of priorities. Moreover, there are frequent external requests trying to catch your attention in order to direct you towards other tasks. These characteristics are typical in the research area (not specific to my conditions) and they are even more emphasized by the fact that I’m involved in many activities.
From time to time, I wonder about best practice, tools and any other supporting process that can help in supporting my work. Traditional project management processes are too rigid for this environment, simple to do list are “too simple” because they become soon overcrowded and almost useless. Around a year ago I discovered SCRUM, a lightweight process that can manage and control software and product development. There are two main documents that I would recommend to read: SCRUM Primer and The SCRUM Software Development Process for Small Teams.
SCRUM requires simple concepts easy to learn for all members of a team. There are also tools to support this process, some of them is also free (e.g., ScrumWorks Basic). At the moment, I’m trying to introduce SCRUM in GridICE, a software project where I’m involved since its beginning (2003) and composed by 9 persons, almost all of them part-time involved.
The idea is to adapt SCRUM to the specific context of GridICE, avoiding the need to introduce a new management tool to install and manage, but to exploit the capabilities of the GForge portal. A SCRUM-specific plug in would be a must, nevertheless we try to identify the best way to use trackers and tasks functionalities. We’ll see the advantages in the next months.
A new release of bib2html is available (r.0.4). The available new feature is the possibility of selecting only one citation based on the bibtex key. The source code is now available in this SVN repository.
In October 2006 I attended the 2006 Cracow Grid Workshop and I gave a poster presentation about an approach for differentiating the access to computing resource connected to a Grid among users of the same Virtual Organization (VO). A paper for the proceedings will be issued shortly and it will contain a more detailed description of the activity. I believe that this topic will be one of the major challenges for current production Grids in the next couple of years.
I’m still surprised in observing the high level of interest around DiffServ-related simulations and my contribution to the NS2 simulator made during the preparation of my Master Thesis during 2001. Since I moved from networking to Grid (almost 5 years), I got several support requests asking whether my contribution was available for newer versions of NS2 or not. From time to time, I got indirect information about persons that made the port and even extended it, but unfortunately I am not aware of any public release.
During this year, after one more request and a bite of spair time, I finally decided to perform such a task and I ported the code to NS2, version 2.29.3. In this occasion, I also decided to release it under GPL license and through the sourceforge portal, hoping that this will attract contributors. The name given to the sourceforge project is DiffServ4NS.

bib2html is my first Wordpress plugin. It was written to satisfy my need for publishing the list of my publications directly from the bibtex text file into wordpress. I wanted to avoid the maintance of many different representations of the same information (e.g., bibtex format, html format), that’s why this plugin.
There is another plugin for wordpress that deals with bibtex files, nevertheless this requires an intermediate insertion of bibliography data into a relational database and I wanted to avoid this step for easy of maintenance.
Bib2html v.0.3 is the first public release and its approach is inspired to the dokuwiki bibtex plugin. The default formatting into html is in IEEE style.
The deadline for submitting a paper to the Middleware for Web Services Workshop is approaching (16 june 2006 extended 3 july 2006).
